01Your policy

We read your policy before the claim does.

A policy has five parts. We review each one with you before you sign, so the cover is the one you think you have.

  1. 01What and whom it protectsThe insured item, the policyholder and the insured. A mistake here voids the rest.
  2. 02What it coversThe contracted coverages, one by one.
  3. 03What it does not coverThe exclusions: the part almost nobody reads.
  4. 04What you payThe deductible you pay on each claim.
  5. 05Up to how much it paysSum insured, limits and term.

02The gap

From damage to payment: what insurance covered in the 10 August earthquake.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake caused an estimated COP 30 trillion in physical losses. Claims to insurers total COP 7.1 trillion and, as of 23 October, COP 1.08 trillion had been paid. Fasecolda acknowledges a significant protection gap: only 9.3% of the country’s homes have home insurance.

The figures come from sources with different scopes: the loss is a model of direct physical damage in five departments; claimed and paid amounts are insurance-industry reports covering 31 departments and every line of business. Proportions are indicative and claimed amounts still change every week. “Not claimed” and “Still to be paid” are differences between the published figures, not measurements: they do not show how much of the loss was insured.
